Environmental influences may have adverse effects on the developing fetus. If such effect results in congenital anomaly or disturbed organ function, it is termed teratogenic effect. Teratogens are different medicines, ionizing radiation, various chemical compounds from the environment and infectious agents.
Dependoing on possible adverse effect on the fetus, the medicines are categorized in specific groups. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classification is used in Slovenia, according to which the medicines are classified in 5 groups. The treatment of pregnant woman is justified, if the risk to her health prevails over the risk of adverse effects on the fetus. Patients with chronic illnesses should use safer, older medicines at the time of pregnancy planning.
